The Scribes looked at each other in utter consternation while the Lord Chief Justice seemed on the verge of a coronary. He rose, bowed, and, with a sheepish half smile of confusion, responded:
“Your Divine Majesty surely cannot mean that…”
“But I do…” answered Venus firmly yet sweetly, smiling.
Overwhelmed, the Lord Chief Justice, completely bemused, slumped down, incapable of pronouncing another word.
Leo arose and solemnly addressed Venus:
“I beg Your Divine Majesty to reconsider. The High Court was convened according to your very own specific instructions…”
Venus cut him off:
“I have changed my mind, which, as you should know, is absolutely my prerogative! Therefore, Tannhäuser stays with me!“
Tannhäuser, tears in his eyes, beaming with unrestrained joy and relief, could not believe his eyes and ears.
